The Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in Commercial Music is designed to help musicians gain the skillsets needed to become and remain competitive in an ever-changing music marketplace. Areas of study include contemporary music theory practice and a performance showcase; the knowledge and understanding of how to create a contemporary ensemble; the fundamentals of the music industry: addressing the marketing, legal, ethical, financial, and artistic issues confronting modern musicians; along with the University's core music curriculum.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music with Commercial Music emphasis requires completion of the following 120 credit hours:
General Education (48 credit hours)
Commercial Music Core (22 credit hours)
Music Core (44 credit hours)
Electives Core (6 credits hour)

Additional Information

  • Those selecting the music composition major must take course Musical Perspectives as part of the general education requirements.

  • course From Sight to Sound - Music Fundamentals is a prerequisite for entrance into course Music Theory I: Elements of Music.

  • course Music Convocation is required for all music majors each semester at CCU (up to 8 semesters).

  • Piano and Piano Class requirements vary in order to pass Piano Proficiency. Students must take course Piano Class I AND course Piano Class II OR course Advanced Keyboard Techniques I AND course Advanced Keyboard Techniques II OR course Piano in consecutive semesters until course Piano Proficiency is passed.

  • Only one ensemble credit each semester counts toward the requirements for the major.

Justification

In addition to the SLOs already included in the BA in Music, our new learning objectives for this emphasis include: The students will gain an understanding of practices needed to be successful in the modern commercial music industry. These practices include: Understanding current market trends in radio, and broadcast media. Learn to create social media campaigns and understand, media data and analytics. Gain a working knowledge of artist, promotion and public relations. Learn how to run a small business as an entrepreneur. Video production, shooting, and editing, will become part of the students' tool kit for a successful career in the music industry.
